10 QUESTIONS


1. What product/service have we taken inspiration from? 

          In response to the coronavirus outbreak, impulse shopping has resulted in a range of everyday items rushing from off racks at the supermarket. These items comprise daily commodities like wheat and toilet tissue and an item that has only been widely accessible for several generations but is viewed as an essential by many individuals: hand sanitizer. When it comes to avoiding coronavirus transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using “a hand alcohol sanitizer that involves at least 60% alcohol if antibacterial soap is not easily obtainable.” (Huddlestone Jr., 2020). 


2. What are its key features/benefits? 

          One of its key features is its ability to kill bacteria and viruses lingering in the atmosphere. It could help in cleaning and disinfecting the micro and macro bacteria. Another key feature is its convenience, with how easy and bag-friendly (depending on the size) to carry everywhere. 


3. Who is our target market? 

          Our target market for this product is everyone, such as children, ladies and gentlemen, adults, and older adults, because everyone needs to be protected from diseases, illnesses, or bacteria. Especially in our situation, COVID-19 is still lingering outside our homes alongside other variants that have entered the country and affected millions of people across the globe.


4. What makes this particular product innovative? 

          The product we proposed embodies simplicity with effectiveness. The product innovation inspired the invention of the fan by Schuyler Skaats Wheeler in 1882 and the creation of the alcohol spray dispenser. Our product aims to sanitize micro-and macro- bacterias that are airborne while helping relieve sickness from those who use it; at the same time, it is done so with a relatively simple design that uses computerized technology. 


5. Is it eco-friendly? (THIS IS NOT REQUIRED) 

          Our product innovation is indeed an eco-friendly product wherein it does not cause any harm to the environment as it helps and secures every individual who will use it against any diseases and viruses. It indicates positive feedback to the atmosphere without spreading harmful effects. 


6. Do we intend to create a sketch/ nonfunctional prototype from scrap material/ drawing/ operational framework to show? A) How will it possibly look like? B) The process it will undertake. 


          a.) Instead of an ordinary spray where an individual will manually operate it with multiple taps, with one press of a button, it will automatically function as a standard portable fan as the alcohol from the dispenser would spread thoroughly in the air. 


          


          b.) The hollow-oval container is the dispenser itself; it stores the alcohol. Once consumed, it could be dismantled from the fan by twisting it, then refilled.



          c.) On the other hand, the fan could be used separately with an installed USB port plugged into any device (phones and tablets) hidden on the backside. 



7. If this will be sold in the market, will it be expensive or will this be for free? 

          We aim to sell it at a cost-efficient price due to the product’s good performance and making it accessible as much as possible to our target demographic. 


8. Will this innovation be a solution to a societal/world problem? 

          In times of worldwide crisis, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, this product could help alleviate the users from getting sick and spreading germs to others. Alcohol is effective against the coronavirus, an enveloped virus, since it removes these enveloped viruses by inactivating the envelope, thus making it non-infectious. In addition, this product sanitizes our hands and our surrounding environment through the fan.

When using this product, please follow the basic warnings: 

Warnings – To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and damage, please observe the following precautions: 


     1. Disconnect the alcohol fan dispenser with the power source when you do not use it or  

         before maintenance. 

     2. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces. 

     3. Please use the product following this manual and use only the functions 

         recommended in this manual. 

     4. Using a separate power outlet instead of a multi-outlet socket is recommended to 

         avoid the danger due to overheating.

     5. Please place the product on a stable table or floor, and do not use it on the edge of 

         the table or an inclined surface to avoid accidental damage to the product. 

     6. Before using the product, please remove the packages of the main body of the alcohol

          fan dispenser and ensure that the filters are installed correctly according to this manual. 

     7. To open the front panel and fill the dispenser, be sure to turn off the power. 

     8. Do not block the air inlet and outlet when using the appliance, so as to avoid damage 

         caused by overheating of the appliance. Do not use it near a soft object, such as 

         curtains. And please ensure that there is 30cm clearance around the appliance. 

     9. Do not use non-original accessories or parts to avoid damage to the product. If 

         non-original parts or accessories are used, the applicable after-sales terms will be 

         invalid.   

   10. If the power cord is damaged and it is necessary to replace the power cord, it must 

         be done by a professional or in a designated maintenance station. 

   11. Do not insert your fingers or other objects into the air outlet of the appliance to avoid 

         damage to the appliance or personal injury. 

   12. When the product has an unusual smell or noise, disconnect the power supply and 

         contact the after-sales service station. 

   13. Do not use flammable cleaning agents such as gasoline; otherwise there is a risk of 

         fire. 

   14. Do not use the product in an environment where explosive materials, flammable 

         liquids, or flammable gases are in close proximity, and do not use it near heating or 

         high-temperature objects. This may result in an explosion. 

   15. Unplug the power cord before cleaning, maintenance and repair. 

   16. Do not pull the power cord while unplugging it. The correct way is to hold the plug and 

         pull it out. 

   17. When unplugging the power cord and moving the appliance, please keep your hands 

         dry. 

   18. When lifting or moving the appliance, use the handle on the product. 

   19. When the product is not in use, please put it back in the box and store it in a safe and 

         cool place. Keep it away from direct sunlight. 

   20. This product is for home use only. If you need to give the product to someone else, 

         please send the manual together. 

   21. Please keep this manual properly. This product is not suitable for some special groups 

         of people, such as children, people with disabilities and mental illness, or people who 

         lack relevant user experience and knowledge unless they are using the product under 

         supervision to ensure safety. Please ensure that children do not use this product as a toy.

Safety Warning: 


     1. Do not cover the air outlet with a towel or other object to avoid damage to the appliance and personal injury. 

     2. When plugging in the power cord, please make sure your hands are dry. Only use dry hands to insert the plug into the socket. Do not handle air cleaners or plugs with wet hands.          

     3. Do not pull the power cord while unplugging it. The correct way is to hold the plug and pull it out to avoid damage to the cord.


Operation Instruct: 


Note: After the power is turned on, a “beep” sound is heard. The power button light is half on, indicating that the power is normal, and it enters the standby state: PM2.5 detection module enters the working state. 


     1. Switch Function


Touch the power switch button to turn the power on and off. 


Note: after powering on and entering into smart mode, the fan speed 1 is enabled, anion module started; lighted icon indicators: the power indicator is full bright and indicators of anion module and PM2.5 detection module are lighted (PM2.5 value is displayed after the 60 seconds countdown from power-on for the first time). 


     2. Light Off


When the appliance is turned on, press this button once, the power indicator light is half on and flashes slowly, the other lights turn off, and other functions remain unchanged. Press this button again and all lights return to their original state. 


     3. Fan Speed Button 


Press the fan speed button to switch between fan speeds Off→1→2→3→Off. The fan speeds are displayed for 5 seconds. If you need to check the current fan speed, press the fan speed button again. 


Troubleshooting: 

     In the face of the following general problems, the users may inspect by themselves. (Note: If you find a problem, please immediately turn off the appliance to prevent damage to the other appliance and other hazards.)

TECHNICAL REPORT


I. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND 

          

Alcohol is a cooling and easing liquid that includes typically 70% denatured ethanol or isopropanol for external use. It is capable of disinfecting materials and other shared objects that are known to attract bacteria and contain viruses.

According to (Berndston, 2021) Viruses are transmitted from person to person mostly by the small droplets formed when a virus-carrier coughs or sneezes. Those droplets may fly and land on a surface, whether or not we can see them. Some may hit another person’s mouth, nose, or eye, while others may touch a hard surface such as a phone, doorknob, or countertop. The length of time the particles stay on the surface depends on the surface as well as the viral strand. It can take as little as a few hours for certain viruses and as long as nine days for others. 


(Dhama, 2021) The characteristics of the virus, the properties of the disinfectants or sanitizers, and the environment where the virus is present or where disinfection is to be undertaken all have a role in the success of SARS-CoV-2 disinfection. Sanitizers come in liquid, gel, or foam forms and are used to reduce the number of microorganisms present and to clean hands. Disinfectants are chemical agents that inactivate or destroy microorganisms, whereas sanitizers are liquid, gel, or foam forms that are used to reduce the number of microorganisms present and to clean hands.


Due to its contagious nature, the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019) pandemic has become a major global public health problem, prompting widespread usage of alcohol disinfectants. When it comes to avoiding coronavirus transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using “a hand alcohol sanitizer that involves at least 60% alcohol if antibacterial soap is not easily obtainable.” (Huddlestone Jr., 2020). These observations, together with the present pandemic in which everything must be sanitized, highlight the importance of constantly sanitizing our hands and surroundings.


 One of the most important sanitation issues is the lack of simple, cost-effective, and efficient sanitation solutions. This innovation is inspired by Schuyler Skaats Wheeler’s invention of a portable fan that is DC powered and the alcohol spray dispenser. Our product aims to sanitize micro-and macro- bacterias that are airborne while helping relieve sickness from those who use it; at the same time, it is done so with a relatively simple design that uses automatic technology. Dispensing the alcohol through the fan helps the alcohol particles move around. 


II. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 


The Alcohol Fan Dispenser is a product brought up in response to everyday lifestyle affected by the current pandemic. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the usage of a hand alcohol sanitizer is highly advised, but the main goal of the product is the ability to kill any trace of the virus present in the atmosphere around its place. The Alcohol Fan Dispenser accomplishes this goal with no problem due to its innate function of spreading alcohol through the air with the use of the fan attached to it. It can also double as a hands-free alcohol dispenser due to the fan lessening the contact between the product and the current and eventual users. At the same time, in height of possible financial problems due to the effects of the pandemic, it is placed at a price which makes it cost-effective, making it affordable and accessible for our target demographic; which ranges from low-middle classes.

III. MECHANISM DESCRIPTION           The product is called Alcohol Fan Dispenser. As the product is referred to, it is a combination of an alcohol dispenser with a built-in fan in it. The fan acts as the spray mechanism that replaces a standard spray, evenly but thinly spreading the alcohol in the air, killing bacteria.          If alcohol is not needed, the fan may be used independently to quickly cool one’s self by directing fresh air to wherever the fan is pointed at

To use the fan, plug the fan with the included micro USB cable to any devices that has a USB slot.

To dispense alcohol, simply press the button and the device will act as a spray bottle, albeit not required to pump the spray manually several times.

The customized air humidifier will be installed at the back center of the fan containing the alcohol for automated spraying making the air purified. 

The wires will be installed connecting the fan and humidifier to the circuit board in order for the humidifier and the fan to run according to the program.


IV. ASSEMBLY AND TESTING
   

          To assemble the product, we must first go through the specifications of the product.
    1. Assemble the designed product.
    2. Mount the fan, air humidifier, circuit board, and battery cartridge.
    3. Put the air humidifier at the back center of the fan.
    4. Connect the fan and humidifier to the circuit board connecting the battery cartridge and power button.
    5. Connect the micro USB cable for power supply.
    6. Fill the container of air humidifier with alcohol.
    7. Put the battery on the battery cartridge.
    8. Turn the power button for testing.

    Assembling the product is simple enough. After buying the product, to dismantle the oval container, you have to twist the container then fill the container with alcohol. By pressing the button it will function as a portable fan and the alcohol from the dispenser will spread thoroughly around you.

V. DISCUSSION (CHALLENGES, DIFFICULTIES YOU MIGHT ENCOUNTER IF THIS PROJECT IS DONE IN REAL LIFE)

          The advantages of using the Alcohol Fan Dispenser as a device to fight CoVid-19 is highly possible. However, the key problem with this innovation is it might become less effective when there is interference from other people when deployed in busy public places. Also, it can only be effective at places where it is pointed at and not the whole room. So, it should be placed at different areas at different times.

     For external usage, the alcohol fan dispenser is equipped with a cooling and soothing liquid that typically contains 70% denatured ethanol or isopropanol. It can disinfect materials and other shared things that have been known to attract bacteria and viruses.


     This product was created with the highest level of safety in mind. Any electrical gadget, however, might be dangerous if used incorrectly. There is a risk of fire, electrical shock, or physical injury. Follow these guidelines to assist ensure a safe operation.


1. Observe all warnings, precautions, and instructions.

2. Regularly inspect for damages on the electrical parts of the device such as battery, battery cartridge, fan motor, and alcohol fan dispenser.

3. Stop using the device if overheating or smelling evidence of burnt electronic devices.

4. Contact the group if there are any concerns regarding the device.


Direction for use 


1. Fill the alcohol container.

2. Put the lithium-ion battery on the battery cartridge. Make sure the alcohol container does not have leakage of liquid  to the battery cartridge before placing the battery.

3. Turn on the power button.

4. Face the device directly to the desired position that will be disinfected.

Threats – Currently, the invention of automated hand-free sanitizing machines have been mainstream due to the obvious reasons, with this comes the countless inventions that could be a better and more efficient product.
